Sochi Olympic Games: an Event Never to be Forgotten
From 7 to 23 February 2014, Sochi, a Russian city, is hosting the XXII Winter Olympic Games. It is the first Winter Olympics in the subtropics and the motto “Hot. Cool. Yours.” emphasises all its features. More than 90 sets of medals in 15 sports disciplines will be contested. As it always has been, the Olympic Games attract a lot of fans and tourists. Exciting and unforgettable sports events await all visitors. Shows with characters of Russian folk tales, chapters of history coming alive, and visual effects are prepared for the opening and closing ceremonies at the Fisht Olympic Stadium of 40.000 people capacity.
This is the second time Olympic Games are held in Russia. In 1980, Moscow hosted the summer Olympics. Sochi is one of the most charming resorts in Russian, its summer capital, “Russian Riviera”. The Black Sea coast is perfectly combined with the Caucasus Mountains, and mild Mediterranean climate has alpine features. Sochi is the city of botanic gardens, arboretums, nature reserves with unique flora and fauna.
Spectators of the Olympics will see competitions in ice hockey and figure skating, biathlon and bobsleigh, skiing and luge, freestyle skiing and curling, snowboarding , skating, ski jumping and others. This year, three new disciplines in freestyle and snowboarding were added to the Olympic program.
The Games will be held in the Olympic Park and in Krasnaya Polyana. The Sochi Olympic Park is located on the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley. Indoor constructions were built there: the Fisht Olympic Stadium, the Bolshoy Ice Dome, the Iceberg Skating Palace, centres for curling and skating, the main Olympic Village.
Krasnaya Polyana (meaning Red Glade) is well known for its unique mountain-sea climate and is considered to be the best ski resort in Russia. It is often referred to as Russian Switzerland. Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort, the RusSki Gorki Jumping Centre, the Extreme Park for snowboarding and freestyle, the Sliding Centre Sanki, Olympic village and other constructions are there for sportsmen and visitors. From 7 to 16 March 2014, these Sochi arenas will host the Winter Paralympics.
The cultural program of the Games is expected to be an excited show. Word famous stars are coming: opera singers Erwin Schrott and Barbara Frittoli, cellist Enrico Dindo, pianist Denis Matsuev, flutist Massimo Merchelli. Gala concert of soloists of the Russian Ballet awaits the visitors of the Games. Arts Festival of the famous Russian conductor Yuri Bashmet will surprise all visitors with a unique combination of music and film art, visual arts and theatre.
The Sochi Olympics have three mascots: the Polar Bear, the Hare and the Leopard. Toys and souvenirs with them are already in great demand.
